The Opportunity 

To support the growth of the Arup Energy Business in the UKIMEA region, we are pleased to offer the opportunity for aspiring leaders to join our growing HV Networks team as an Associate. 

Arup’s HV Networks team in the UK consists of power systems professionals working from Arup offices across Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow and Newcastle. The team provides multi-disciplinary design and advisory services to electricity utilities, renewable energy developers, local authorities, and industrial facilities across the globe.

The position will be based in Arup’s Glasgow office and will be integrated within a vertically aligned Energy, Water and Resources Group in our North Sub-region. Reporting to the Power Systems Lead in the North, the Associate will provide key technical leadership to the team, and support growth through project delivery and business development. The UK HV Networks team work closely with colleagues across the wider UKIMEA region as well as other regions, globally.

Key Responsibilities include; Leadership; Support the fulfilment of business targets for the HV Networks team, and the overall Energy team by extension; Maintain team motivation and promote Arup values within the team; Manage and plan team resource and workload to ensure high overall team utilisation and diversity in projects;  Assume the role of Line Manager role for members of the team, including setting objectives, agreeing development targets, conduct performance appraisal, as well as manage the day-to-day issues of the direct reporting line; Project Delivery;  Assume the role of Project Manager on Power Systems projects, ensuring project delivery to budget, time and quality, and in accordance with Arup Management System (AMS) processes;

The successful candidate will lead the delivery of specialist Power Systems tasks within multi-disciplinary projects, reviewing models and reports prepared by team members while providing expert technical input to advisory projects. In addition to project work, actively contribute to business development by maintaining a strong pipeline of work to ensure high team utilization, building and sustaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders to expand the client base. Support and manage tendering activities by developing technically and commercially viable proposals, and participate in Arup’s marketing initiatives to promote the firm’s values and capabilities.

Furthermore, you will  contribute to the setting of targets in the Group Business Plan and devise the operating plan to achieve targets along with  supporting growth of a diverse range of skills and capabilities within the team through recruitment, training and strategic recruitment to meet evolving client demand.

The role may involve travel within the UK and internationally to fulfil project commitments.

Is this role right for you? 

We are looking for candidates holding a PhD, Masters or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering /Electrical Power Systems or similar; Chartered Engineer status with the IET or other equivalent professional bodies.

We are interested in all, or some of the skills and experience listed below;

  • Extensive experience working within a consultancy setting;
  • Strong understanding of the functionalities and characteristics of all the equipment that makes up an electrical power system;
  • Skills in the modelling of and the performance of power system studies at distribution and transmission levels, using commercial power system analysis software;
  • Extensive experience in line and project management;
  • Experience in bid (technical and commercial) preparation;
  • Established network of clients and contacts within the power sector.
