Civil Designer/Drafter
Joining Arup
Arup's purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world.
As a world leader in civil engineering, Arup delivers the full spectrum of site development and transport infrastructure consulting services. As a key member of the civils team, you will contribute your experience to strengthen Arup's technical capability across a broad range of projects — encompassing a broad range of design skills that are key components to the successful delivery of projects.
Working alongside senior drafters and civil engineers, you will produce clear, coordinated technical drawings across transport, energy, water and site development projects for clients including government agencies, construction contractors and private developers.
The Opportunity
- Preparing drawings and supporting senior drafters across a variety of transport, energy, water and site development projects, with responsibilities covering the preparation of drawings and technical documentation production.
- Being accountable for drafting activities and working within agreed programme timeframes and project budgets, using CAD to develop coordinated drawings in accordance with relevant drafting standards and guidelines.
- Being responsible for quality assurance for work you and your delegates prepare, and working in accordance with Arup's Quality Management System.
- Working on complex multidisciplinary projects, interacting with design teams, participating in design and model reviews, associated reporting and managing the rectification process, whilst collaborating with project team members to develop innovative, compatible and integrated solutions.
- Sharing design skills proactively with other members of the team and contributing constructive feedback to the continuous improvement of Arup systems, standards and processes via skills networks.
At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas. You will have the opportunity to do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.
Is this role right for you?
- You have a sound knowledge of drafting — including familiarity with current industry standards for roads and streets such as Transport for NSW and Australian Standards — and are competent in Autodesk AutoCAD, including advanced features such as surfaces, corridors and pipe networks.
- You are competent in the development of technical drawings and associated tools including CAD, Bluebeam and ProjectWise, with experience working on complex multidisciplinary projects and participating in design and model reviews.
- A recognised, relevant tertiary qualification is preferred; you also hold membership of a relevant professional institution or significant credit towards eligibility, alongside a commitment to continued personal development.
- You communicate clearly with people at all levels in both technical and non-technical environments, have strong written communication and report writing skills, and maintain personal effectiveness and good time management — particularly during periods of high workload.
- You remain positively motivated, foster team spirit under pressure, assist others in meeting deadlines, and demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement and to delivering excellent outcomes.
