Arup Canada’s Programme, Project and Commercial Management team currently has project management and leadership responsibility for numerous major infrastructure projects in the Toronto Area including Finch LRT, Eglinton Crosstown West Extension, Scarborough Subway Extension Tunnel and the Bloor Yonge Capacity Improvement with many other projects in the pipeline. To deliver these major complex projects successfully now and into the future, it is critical that the Toronto Based Project Management Team has the requisite skills and experience. We are currently seeking a Deputy Commissioning & Handover (C&H) Manager to support our C&H Lead to work with our valued clients on these major transit projects in our Toronto office. 

The opportunity 

  • In this role, you will initially be part of an Arup Technical Advisory (TA) team, planning and reporting on progress of the commissioning and handover of active construction contracts. 

  • In the role as Deputy Commissioning & Handover Manager you will support the C&H Lead on major infrastructure projects, providing oversight of the commissioning and handover process activities. 

  • In the role you will represent the Contracting Authority (CA) team for technical inputs in commissioning team meetings. 

  • You will be responsible for obtaining agreement from all stakeholders on contents of commissioning packages received from Project Co. 

  • Assist with C&H Lead in advising the contracting authority team on best path forward for commissioning and handover if there are conflicting views amongst team members. 

  • Supporting the management of the review of the deficiencies log and working with the construction and quality team to confirm deficiencies are corrected 

  • Supporting the managing the review of the commissioning packages 

  • Assisting in the establishment of handover requirements and timelines 

  • Establishing sample documents that can be used to improve the commissioning and handover process 

  • Coordinating with project coordinators, contracting authority team, third parties, and independent certifiers. 

  • Chairing bi-weekly meetings with teams to provide a status update and present any issues to be resolved during the commissioning and handover process 

  • Attending monthly commissioning and handover meetings 

  • Support leadership to grow a C&H team and improve the C&H skills of selected members of the wider PPCM team. 

  • Develop relationships with both existing and new key clients and collaborators. 


     

Is this role right for you? 

  • Master's Degree in Civil / Geotechnical (or similar relevant field) from an accredited university. 

  • Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility for membership with PEO. 

  • 8+ years' combined experience in rail and large infrastructure projects, with at least one year experience supporting commissioning and handover activities. 

  • Proven track record to collaborate and connect with clients and constructors. 

  • Alignment to Arup’s values within leadership, collaboration, etc. 

  • A creative approach to problem-solving with a focus on continual improvement and delivering sustainable and value led project outcomes. 

  • A desire and ability to share knowledge and proactively mentor and lead individuals and teams. 

  • Knowledgeable in design and construction processes and terms. Previous experience preparing and managing construction documents and supporting permitting applications. 

  • Excellent client service/management, interpersonal, problem-solving, verbal and written communication skills. 

  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and PowerBI. 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills 

  • Self-motivated, energetic and an eager to learn and grow professionally. 

  • A proactive approach with a willingness to take ownership. 

  • Strong prioritization and time management skills needed to complete tasks within deadlines.

Hiring Range - The good faith base salary hiring range for this job performed in Toronto is $110,000 to $130,000 per year. Benefits are not included in the base salary range. Summary of benefits are included in this posting with details provided to applicants at the time of interview. Please note hiring ranges for candidates performing work outside of Toronto will differ.
