Arup Belgrade is offering an exciting opportunity for a talented Ecologist / Ornithologist to join the Arup Belgrade Team in Serbia, and professionally develop through working on wide range of projects funded by European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) International, Financial Institutions (IFIs) and other Clients in Serbia and abroad.
Our Team is engaged in planning, implementation and monitoring and auditing environmental performance of various road, rail, water and energy projects. Our aim is to support our clients in implementing sustainable projects, and avoid, prevent and minimize any detrimental ecological impacts. We are also advising stakeholders on measures to strengthen their performance and achieve compliance with requirements of IFIs, UN Sustainable Development Goals and other relevant international policies and standards.
The Opportunity
The primary focus of this role is to provide ecological and biodiversity inputs on a wide range of projects, working closely with other disciplines to ensure ecological objectives for projects are delivered successfully, within budget and program.
The successful candidate must have strong skills in bird identification, both by sight and by sound, specifically for species present in the Balkan Peninsula. A thorough understanding of the region's avifauna, including migratory patterns, behaviour, and vocalizations, is essential for accurate field assessments and monitoring.
As an Ecologist at Arup, you will:
- Assisting with the planning and delivery of projects across Serbia and abroad.
- Provide ecological and biodiversity inputs for projects and sound advice to our Clients.
- Coordinating and undertaking biodiversity surveys, reviews and assessments as part of Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), Environmental and Social Due Diligences (ESDD) and other types of projects.
- Designing survey / monitoring methods.
- Preparing specialist studies and plans such as critical habitat assessments, biodiversity management/ action/ offset plans etc.
- Authoring reports, technical notes, management plans, quotations and other documentation.
- Liaising and coordinating with Arup Belgrade and Arup Global colleagues, as well as local consultants and Clients, through face to face and virtual meetings.
- Visiting project location and performing site inspections for the purpose of determining conditions at site.
- Work under supervision within a defined area of responsibility. This may include being responsible for specific parts of an ecological project or task.

We’re looking for someone who is passionate about biodiversity conservation and sustainable development, aligning with Arup’s purpose of shaping a better world.
- Master or higher degree in appropriate field (e.g. ecology/ biodiversity conservation, ornithology, zoology, etc).
- Membership in a relevant NGO: Candidates are required to be active members of a organization focused on ornithology, bird conservation. Such as the League for Ornithological Action of Serbia, Birds of Prey Protection Foundation, BID Josif Pančić, or an equivalent organization.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both English and Serbian language.
- Strong report writing skills, including excellent command of MS Office Word, Excell, Power Point.
- Ability to work under moderate supervision within a defined area of responsibility.
- Excellent (personal) planning and organization skills.
- Willingness to travel, both in Serbia and internationally, and work in field.
- Experience in Serbian legislation related to biodiversity and nature conservation.
- Experience in assessment / preassessment / scoping using the IUCN Red Data List and other literature.
- Experience in Serbia or internationally based fieldwork.
- B category driving licence, independent / active driver.
