The main focus of Arup’s Water team in Sheffield is stormwater. We advise our clients on the risk of flooding at strategic (city or region-wide) or site scale. We model the movement of water and the risks associated with flooding, using integrated hydraulic models. We plan and design nature-based solutions to manage stormwater and provide wider benefits in the built and rural environment. This team has enjoyed strong organic growth, but demand for practical and rigorously-proven solutions continues to rise.

The Opportunity
We are seeking a new team member to help us with our growing workload in strategic water services including Nature-based Solution (NbS) for the wider catchment and land use management to support resilient water systems and nature recovery; supporting technical work such as hydrology and hydraulic modelling studies and/or strategic policy work. You must have a passion for sustainability, a strong belief in the benefits of nature-based solutions and the desire to influence colleagues, clients and stakeholders to implement new ways of managing land. You should be digital-savvy and have an interest in using digital tools to solve complex problems or eliminate repetitive tasks. You might be an engineer, a scientist, an environmentalist or have any related technical background. We appreciate the value of diversity of education and experience because it allows us to bring new perspectives and alternative solutions.
Reporting to the Water Team Leader in Sheffield, your typical responsibilities will include: Working as part of a team to provide hands-on input to a variety of projects; Use of technical analysis and design software packages; Use of knowledge and skills to deliver strategic advice; Producing technical reports and presentations to convey complex concepts, and to influence clients and stakeholders; Coordinating and liaising with colleagues in other areas of the business in a variety of disciplines; Working directly with clients and other professionals with limited supervision; Attending and contributing to project meetings (internal and external); Undertaking assistant/project management roles on projects with a view to develop this skill further.

We are looking for the following qualifications, skills and attributes in you:
- Professional qualification in engineering, natural sciences or a related subject/Working towards a professional qualification with CIWEM, ICE or other recognised industry body.
- Experience in the water or environmental sector.
- Knowledge and experience of applying NbS within water management (such as Natural Flood Management).
- Understanding of policy context, policy setting and experience of having undertaking strategic studies.
- A desire to embrace digital technologies and innovations to find efficiencies in appraisal/design processes.
- Commercially aware and developing strong planning and organisational skills.
