Geotechnical Engineer
Joining Arup
Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach have set us apart for 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world.
Arup’s work in the Philippines spans major buildings, transport, water, energy, industrial and urban development projects. Locally, Arup has contributed to high-profile buildings such as the Philippine Museum of Natural History, Grand Hyatt Metrocenter and St Francis Shangri-La Place, as well as infrastructure and advisory work connected with national programmes for roads, bridges, tunnels, water and energy systems. The role offers exposure to challenging ground engineering problems across dense urban sites, seismic environments, reclaimed or soft-ground areas, mountainous terrain and large-scale infrastructure corridors.
The Opportunity
As a Geotechnical Engineer at Arup, you will help shape resilient, efficient and buildable solutions for complex buildings, transport, water, energy and urban infrastructure projects. The role combines technical analysis, field investigation, design delivery and client-facing problem solving, with opportunities to contribute from early feasibility through to detailed design and construction support. You will work with multidisciplinary teams to understand ground conditions, manage geotechnical risks and deliver practical advice that improves safety, performance and value for clients. In the Philippines, this work supports nationally significant infrastructure and development projects, helping communities move, connect, live and grow more sustainably.
Day-to-day responsibilities
- Plan, specify and manage geotechnical site investigations, laboratory testing and fieldwork, including health, safety and logistical requirements.
- Review desktop information, borehole logs, laboratory results and site observations to build a clear understanding of ground conditions and project constraints.
- Carry out geotechnical analysis and design for foundations, retaining systems, excavations, earthworks, slopes, seismic considerations and ground improvement.
- Prepare concise technical reports, design notes, drawings, specifications and client-ready advice that clearly explain risks, assumptions and recommendations.
- Collaborate with structural, civil, transport, water, energy and advisory teams to develop integrated solutions for complex projects.
- Attend internal and external meetings, communicate with clients and contractors, and help translate project requirements into practical geotechnical scope and deliverables.
- Manage smaller work packages or support larger project teams by planning tasks, coordinating resources, tracking progress and maintaining quality.
- Support junior engineers through technical guidance, checking, mentoring and knowledge sharing across the geotechnics team.
At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas.
You will have the opportunity do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.
Is this role right for you?
Knowledge & Experience:
- Relevant tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering. Postgraduate study in Geotechnical Engineering is desirable.
- At least five years’ experience in geotechnical engineering including design, site investigation and construction support.
- Ability to interpret ground investigation data and develop geotechnical models, design calculations, drawings, specifications and reports under limited supervision.
- Working knowledge of common geotechnical design software and relevant design standards, with sound engineering judgement and attention to quality.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain technical issues clearly to clients, contractors and multidisciplinary project teams.
- Good planning, organisation and commercial awareness, including the ability to manage tasks, budgets, deadlines and competing priorities.
