The Opportunity

The Focus Markets geography seeks a Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality Manager (HSEQ)to coordinate HSEQ activities, providing support to the members in the South Africa offices as well as our project teams.  The Arup HSEQ Management System is an integrated management system externally certified to Quality (ISO 9001), Environment (ISO 14001) and Health and Safety (ISO 45001).  The role holder will be responsible for the coordination of all activities related to the implementation of the HSEQ management system in the South Africa offices. This is a business facing role requiring well developed skills in communication, influencing and collaboration. Daily liaison with project managers, project directors and leaders will be required. They will also work with the wider global integrated HSEQ team and the senior HSEQ leadership team frequently. The role will cover all three South Africa offices (Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg) so there will be frequent domestic travel needed to ensure that there is face to face engagement and in person presence in all offices. The role holder will also be responsible for ensuring internal audits are scheduled and conducted.

General Duties will include: Co-ordinating HSEQ activities. Advising project managers and project directors on HSEQ related matters. Co-ordinating H&S activities with Office Leaders and Office Safety Coordinators. Ensuring compliance across each of components of the HSEQ processes, systems and relevant central & state legislation. Liaise with internal HSEQ team members as appropriate. Attend HSEQ team meetings. Maintaining an approach that delivers continuous improvement. Providing reports and implement interventions related to identified trends. Conduct internal project audits, provide feedback to auditees and support the members in closing out findings. Take part in UKIMEA regional process audits as require. Represent Arup at external 3rd party audits. Conduct second party audits on sub-consultants as required. Planning and delivering against external audit requirements. Providing HSEQ related information for prequalification and bid submissions.

 Ensuring that all members are trained in line with current HSEQ requirements. Providing support in the implementation of the health, safety, environmental and quality strategies and action plans. Influence sustainable practices and initiatives in the offices. Support the implementation of environmental and quality practices and management systems to continually reduce any negative impact to the environment. Ensure HSEQ incidents are reported by staff and take part in investigations as requested. Oversee the office safety advisors to make sure that all office H&S requirements are adhered to and relevant documentation kept up to date, as per the Arup H&S processes. Ensure HSEQ record keeping and timely reporting. Drive continual improvement initiatives in the office across all HSEQ disciplines. Promote a positive safety culture for all – at office, client and site level.

Is this role right for you?

We are looking for people with:

  • Recognizable experience in the professional services industry for the level of seniority of the role and typically 10 years' experience working in a Quality, H&S and Environmental role at the level of seniority of the role.
  • Lead auditor qualifications in at least one of the standards: ISO 9001, ISO 45001 or ISO 14001 
  • NEBOSH International General Certificate
  • A positive and collaborative approach
  • A sense of pragmatism
  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills
  • A methodical approach but with ability to flex
  • Management skills with a hands-on approach
  • Attention to detail without losing sight of the end goal
  • Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines
  • Ability to influence and challenge staff of all levels
  • Ability to motivate staff to work within the management system and strive to continually improve
  • Ability to travel

The below are preferable:

  •  IEMA or equivalent environmental qualification
  •  Professional chartership/registration in either Quality, H&S or Environmental
