Mechanical Lead Data Centre (m, w, d)

Arup’s international and multidisciplinary team in Frankfurt is at the forefront of designing innovative and energy-efficient data centres, ensuring that our clients meet their goals of performance, cost-efficiency, and sustainability.

The Opportunity

Join our international and multidisciplinary team of passionate design engineers and help us create high-quality, sustainable, and innovative data centre structures. You will work on medium to large-scale mission-critical projects, covering all stages of design — from concept to construction supervision and handover.

As a Mechanical Engineer - Data Centre at Arup, you will:

  • Provide technical leadership and set design standards for mechanical systems (Cooling, HVAC, PH, Fire Fighting, Diesel supply and Energy) across medium to large-scale mission-critical projects.
  •  Lead strategic client engagements, understanding their business objectives and translating them into innovative, sustainable, and cost-effective mechanical solutions.
  •  Oversee the preparation, review, and approval of design deliverables, ensuring quality, compliance, and alignment with project goals.
  •  Present complex technical solutions to technical and non-technical audiences, advocating industry best practices and innovative methodologies.
  • Coordinate and influence across internal and external stakeholders, including multi-disciplinary teams, authorities, consultants, and international clients.
  •  Mentor, coach, and supervise senior and junior engineers, developing technical capabilities and leadership across the local, regional, and global network.
  • Connect project-level solutions to broader organizational strategy, driving innovation and efficiency in data centre design.
  • Lead initiatives to improve design standards, operational efficiency, sustainability, and digital workflows within the team.

Does this role inspire you?

We are looking for someone passionate about sustainable data centre design and who possesses:

  • University degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • 12+ years’ experience designing mission-critical mechanical systems, preferably with a strong track record in data centres
  •   Deep expertise in industrial precision cooling, and mission-critical mechanical systems design for large-scale data centre projects, with extensive experience spanning early site selection, technical due diligence, permitting, detailed design, and procurement.
  • Proven expertise across construction, commissioning, and handover phases of industrial and mission-critical buildings
  • Extensive knowledge of German codes, standards, and international best practices
  • Deep knowledge of RIBA, HOAI, and hyperscalers delivery methodologies
  • Proven experience in Revit MEP / BIM, CFD, Hydraulic studies and digital design workflows
  • Fluent in English and B1 German, ideally Fluent in both
  • Exceptional communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills
  • Strategic mindset with the ability to align engineering solutions with business and client objectives
  • Strong focus on quality, sustainability, and innovation

Nice to have

  • Experience in technical due diligence, Tier Level assessments (UI, TÜV IT), and SPOF analysis
  • Expertise in energy efficiency metrics (EEFG, PUE/WUE)
  • Experience leading cross-regional or international projects
