The Opportunity

We are seeking a Principal Civil Engineer or Consultant to lead a diverse range of projects, in the flood resilience, coastal or water company space. Our clients include the Environment Agency, Southern Water, Wessex Water and Local Authorities.

We are looking for an individual who is passionate about people, technical excellence and providing an outstanding service to our clients. You will be an active, collaborative member of our water team across the UK. You will lead, manage and deliver projects across the project lifecycle aligned with your experience and development needs, allowing you the opportunity to learn and grow your career supported by our team. Your role will be crucial in ensuring the continued success and growth of the team via a combination of technical and management activities, e.g., design, client liaison, project management, advising, and mentoring.

Key to your role and development of your managerial skills, would be mentoring of junior colleagues and collaborators. To this end, the ideal candidate would seek to constantly learn and develop their skills and expertise, in a positive and engaging manner. While the provision of civil engineering and/or water consultancy is a key part of your role it is also important that you assist in developing our business by attending client meetings, producing bid documentation and general business development activities.

As a senior member of the team, you will mentor and delegate work amongst engineers and other specialists, supporting them with your experience. Workload is varied and there will be opportunities to lead and develop innovation in areas such as sustainability and carbon reduction with forward-thinking value-driven clients.

You will have the opportunity to make a difference – to Arup, to your career, to our staff and to the clients and communities we serve.

Is this role right for you?

We are looking for a senior/principal consultant or engineer with curiosity, personal drive, and technical know-how. You will be as inspired as we are by the problems we are solving and excited to help our clients and lead teams delivering the solutions.

Engineering experience in the UK flood risk management and/or water company sector is desirable. You will have appreciation of the project cycle, from conception and business case justification through to delivery of detailed design and construction. Working with colleagues at all levels, such as designers and project managers, you will be guiding the delivery of a wide range of projects.

As this role is critical to the continued success and growth of our business, it is essential that you are a naturally encouraging colleague who is highly motivated and proactive and demonstrates an excellent attention to detail combined with commercial acumen.  As a flexible, self-assured, and adaptable colleague you will be comfortable working in multidisciplinary teams with colleagues from a wide variety of professional and cultural backgrounds.

If you have some or all of these skills and experience, we’d love to hear from you.

We are seeking the following skills and knowledge:

  • Relevant degree and Chartered status.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of civil/infrastructure design in the water sector (e.g. flood resilience, coastal or water industry).
  • The ability to manage a complex and varied workload often involving multiple concurrent projects.
  • Prior Project management on small-medium size projects, whilst mentoring junior colleagues.
  • Ability to manage clients directly.
