Our Toronto office is looking for a Rail Major Project Leader to help in leading large scale rail projects in Canada, such as VIA High Frequency Rail (HFR) projects and others. You’ll have the opportunity to lead our multi-disciplinary teams to delivery transformative rail projects across Canada. you will provide strategic advice to VIA HFR, engage with high-level stakeholders including Federal and Provincial Ministries, and support negotiations. Your role involves guiding a multidisciplinary project team with a focus on rail and systems design, enhancing the team's technical skills. Additionally, you will mentor current and future team members in railway engineering best practices and aim to become an accredited Project Director.

  • Lead, motivate and drive team members within Arup, with our external stakeholders and in our subconsultants to deliver a project that meets and exceeds our Client’s expectations
  • Identify staffing needs, actively engage in the recruitment and hiring process and make sound hiring decisions
  • Support career development for our members including through mentoring, coaching, and by participating in promotion, appraisal and review processes
  • Monitor project budgets, expenses, and financial performance to achieve revenue targets and profit margins.
  • Implement financial controls and risk management practices to mitigate financial risks associated with projects.
  • Ensure that contracts are in alignment with the firm's commercial objectives and risk tolerance.
  • Identify potential clients and projects that align with the firm's expertise and strategic goals.
  • Lead the development and execution of business development strategies to win new projects and contracts and diversify services provided to clients 
  • Oversee the preparation of proposals and bid submissions
  • Negotiate contracts, terms, and conditions 
  • Monitor project timelines, budgets, and resources and provide oversight and guidance to staff
  • Ensure that projects are  being delivered on time, within budget, and to client satisfaction.
  • Monitor project progress, milestones, and deliverables to identify and address potential issues or risks.
  • Ensure that projects are being delivered in compliance with contractual obligations and quality standards and with technical excellence.
  • Establish and maintain quality assurance and quality control measures and standards to ensure excellence of delivery and client satisfaction

Is this role right for you?

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or any equivalent program
  • Minimum of 20 years of experience leading large multi-disciplinary rail projects and programs, in Canada and internationally.
  • Must be a licensed engineer in Ontario under the PEO (Professional Engineers Ontario)
  • Must be able to communicate in both English and French fluently
  • Experienced and has practical knowledge in the design, construction, and delivery of large passenger rail projects
  • Managed procurement of passenger rail projects through alternative project delivery contracts.
  • Understands passenger rail systems including track, signaling, communication and power.
  • Experience negotiating with freight railroad companies
  • Understanding of the Federal and Provincial environmental and permit, license and approval processes for rail projects.

Hiring Range - The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in Toronto is $250,000 to 300,000 per year. This range is commensurate with experience, educational background, and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary. Please note hiring ranges for candidates performing work outside of Toronto will differ.
