The Opportunity
Electrical Design/Engineering/Consulting: As a senior member of the Technology Team (a team specialised in data centre projects), you will provide technical leadership and oversight in electrical design/engineering/consulting for technology and data centre projects. You will act as a senior electrical engineer, engaging directly with clients and leading the electrical discipline across complex projects.
•    Reporting line: Japan Technology Lead
•    Work collaboratively with Japan and APAC teams to deliver technology and data centre projects for global clients.
•    Provide technical leadership and oversight for electrical engineering across multiple technology and data centre projects, from early concept through to construction and handover.
•    Prepare electrical design calculations, specifications, drawings, and technical reports in accordance with Japanese codes, standards, and regulations, as well as relevant international standards.
•    Coordinate with internal multidisciplinary teams (architectural, structural, mechanical, fire, sustainability, and other engineering disciplines), and external stakeholders including clients, authorities, and contractors.
•    Support statutory submissions, authority approvals, and respond to technical queries during design and construction phases.
•    Participate in site inspections, technical reviews, and design audits as required.
•    Contribute to project planning, resource management, and programme delivery to meet quality, cost, and schedule objectives.
•    Act as a trusted electrical technical advisor to clients, supporting key discussions on scope, risk, programme, and delivery strategy.
•    Lead, mentor, and develop engineers within the Japan Technology Team, supporting capability growth and succession planning.
•    Support the growth of Arup’s Technology Sector in Japan by contributing to work winning, client development, and shaping future opportunities in collaboration with the Japan Technology Lead and regional leaders.

Is this role right for you?
Essential requirements
•    At least 10 years of relevant experience in building services design, with experience in Japan preferred.
•    Demonstrated experience leading teams, managing technical risk, and engaging directly with clients and key stakeholders.
•    Strong understanding of Japanese building services regulations, codes of practice, and approval procedures.
•    Native-level Japanese language proficiency

Education / Qualifications
•    Bachelor’s degree or above in Architecture, Engineering, or a related discipline.

Preferred / additional attributes
•    Holding one or more relevant Japanese professional qualifications, such as: First-class Architect (一級建築士), First-class Equipment Design Architect (設備設計一級建築士), Professional Engineer, Japan (技術士), Building Services Engineer (建築設備士), Third-class Electrical Chief Engineer (第三種電気主任技術者), or equivalent international professional qualifications.
•    A collaborative team player who respects colleagues and can work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
•    Willingness to work proactively with overseas offices
•    Positive and open attitude toward communication in English
