Senior Engineer / Consultant – Movable Bridges
Amsterdam
Shape a future with purpose at Arup in the Netherlands.
Engineer the mechanics of tomorrow’s iconic movable bridges.
Arup’s purpose, shared values, and collaborative approach have set us apart for over 75 years, guiding how we shape a better world. In a country defined by its waterways, movable bridges are the critical arteries of our infrastructure. Our Infrastructure team constantly pushes the boundaries of ‘Total Design’, delivering innovative, cost-effective, and sustainable solutions that combine geotechnical, marine, structural, and mechanical expertise to shape the future of our built environment.
This is a unique, entrepreneurial opportunity to take the helm and expand our movable bridges capability. You won't just design; you will build, lead, and inspire a dedicated multidisciplinary team, driving the delivery of future-proof infrastructure in the Netherlands and internationally.
From complex renovations of historic structures to the conceptualization of new, state-of-the-art movable bridges, you will have the autonomy to pioneer new digital tools and innovative engineering methodologies. This role is perfect for a technical visionary who wants to leave a lasting legacy while advising top-tier clients on their most complex mechanical and structural challenges. One of the projects that Arup Amsterdam is working on now is the renovation of the iconic van Brienenoordbrug.
As a Senior Engineer – Movable Bridges at Arup, you will:
Lead the complex design and advanced analysis of steel and mechanical structures for movable bridges, covering both innovative new builds and critical renovations.
Build and inspire a dedicated team of passionate engineers, fostering a strong culture of active knowledge sharing, collaboration, and technical excellence.
Develop cutting-edge engineering solutions and digital tools to advise and support our clients through every phase of the project lifecycle, ensuring the best possible outcomes.
Collaborate seamlessly across disciplines (civil, structural, geotechnical) to deliver holistic, integrated infrastructure solutions.
Connect to an international network of engineers, building the critical infrastructure of the future, all over the world.
Does this role inspire you?
We're looking for a highly specialized engineer who combines deep mechanical/structural expertise with a passion for leadership and innovation. We also value:
A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Structural Engineering.
7 to 10 years of demonstrable experience in the design and analysis of mechanical equipment and steel structures specifically for movable bridges.
Deep technical expertise and independent capability in developing designs, utilizing advanced FEM (Finite Element Method) modelling software.
Comprehensive knowledge of relevant industry standards, specifically NEN 6786-1 (VOBB) and the Machinery Directive (Machinerichtlijn).
Strong leadership and communication skills, with a proven track record of building, managing, and inspiring multidisciplinary teams.
Fluency in Dutch (minimum B2 level) and professional proficiency in English.
