Senior Environmental Specialist

Belgrade, Serbia

Shape a future with purpose at Arup in Belgrade

Lead environmental assessments that enable responsible infrastructure and sustainable investment.

Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach have set us apart for 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

Our Environmental and Social team supports lenders, development banks and international financial institutions in the responsible delivery of major infrastructure and energy projects. Working across international markets, we develop and review environmental and social impact assessments that align with national legislation and environmental and social requirements of financing institutions.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a Senior Environmental Specialist to join our multidisciplinary team in Belgrade. This is an opportunity to lead the development and review of Environmental and Social Impact Assessments, known as ESIAs, for complex infrastructure, transport, renewable energy and water projects.

As a Senior Environmental Specialist at Arup, you will:

  • Lead and coordinate the preparation and review of ESIAs and other environmental assessment deliverables for major infrastructure and energy projects.
  • Manage multidisciplinary project teams, coordinating technical inputs, project schedules, site visits, deliverables and budgets.
  • Assess environmental topics including air quality, water quality, soil, noise and other environmental risks, working closely with biodiversity and social specialists.
  • Apply national environmental legislation alongside international lender requirements, particularly the environmental and social policies and standards of the EBRD, World Bank and other international financial institutions.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure teams and environmental specialists across Arup’s European and international offices, contributing to road, motorway, rail, wind, solar and water projects.

Does this role inspire you?

We are looking for someone who is passionate about responsible infrastructure, environmental protection and delivering robust assessments that create better outcomes for communities and the environment. We also value:

  • At least five years of relevant professional experience, ideally including the preparation or review of environmental impact assessments for large infrastructure, transport, energy or water projects.
  • A degree in environmental engineering, environmental science, geography, biology or another relevant discipline, combined with broad professional experience across environmental topics.
  • Experience leading project teams and coordinating technical specialists, programmes, site activities, deliverables and budgets.
  • Knowledge of national environmental assessment requirements, with experience of or awareness of EBRD, World Bank, EIB or comparable international lender environmental and social standards.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English. Knowledge of Spanish or French would be an advantage.
  •    Willingness to travel and undertake site visits as required, with the ability or willingness to drive for site-based activities.
