Senior Geotechnical Engineer

We are looking for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join our Americas East Infrastructure team, with a strong emphasis on geotechnical design, analysis, interpretation and delivery. The successful candidate will provide hands-on technical input and review across infrastructure and building projects, including bridges, rail and transit, tunnels and underground structures, waterfront/marine works, aviation, utilities and major redevelopment projects.
The Opportunity
- Lead and deliver geotechnical design workstreams for infrastructure and building projects, including bridges, rail and transit, tunnels and underground structures, waterfront/marine works, aviation, utilities, major redevelopment projects, and data centers.
- Perform, check and review geotechnical analyses and design calculations for shallow and deep foundations, retaining walls, support of excavation, earthworks, settlement, slope stability, ground improvement, groundwater/dewatering considerations, and underground structures.
- Develop geotechnical design parameters and practical recommendations from subsurface investigation data, laboratory testing, existing records, numerical analyses and engineering judgement.
- Scope, plan, support delivery and interpret subsurface investigation and laboratory testing programs, translating ground information into design recommendations and construction-stage advice.
- Prepare, check and review geotechnical calculation packages, reports, input to drawings, technical specifications, design memoranda and construction-phase documentation.
- Undertake soil-structure interaction analyses and numerical modelling using tools such as Plaxis 2D/3D, FLAC, LS-DYNA or similar software, with a focus on practical design interpretation.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate geotechnical recommendations into civil, structural, tunnel, rail, waterfront, aviation, utility and building design packages.
- Support construction-phase services, including review of contractor submittals and RFIs, interpretation of field conditions, foundation and earthworks observations, instrumentation review and technical input during construction.
- Coordinate with geotechnical subconsultants, drilling contractors, laboratories and field staff to support high-quality investigation and design delivery.
- Mentor, delegate to and provide technical guidance to junior geotechnical engineers, including review of calculations, reports, drawings and field documentation.
- Support proposal and scope development for geotechnical design and investigation work, contributing to technically robust solutions that can be delivered within agreed scope, schedule and budget.
- Present technical material clearly to internal teams, clients, reviewers, contractors and non-technical audiences.
- Support technical input to bids and proposal for geotechnical projects.
- Support senior leadership to maintain relationships with existing and prospective clients with in geotechnical works.

Is this role right for you?
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Geological, Geotechnical or related engineering discipline; Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering preferred.
- Minimum 8 years of relevant geotechnical engineering design experience, including demonstrated experience leading and checking technical design work.
- New York PE required, or ability to obtain New York PE within an agreed timeframe. PE licensure in New Jersey and/or Massachusetts is also desirable.
- Strong technical experience in deep and shallow foundations, retaining walls, support of excavation, earthworks, slope stability, settlement analysis, ground improvement, groundwater/dewatering considerations, and underground structures.
- Familiarity with relevant US codes, standards and guidance for infrastructure and building projects.
- Experience planning, procuring, supervising and interpreting subsurface investigation and laboratory testing programs.
- Experience with digital workflows for geotechnical data processing, calculation automation, GIS, OpenGround/gINT or similar tools.
- Experience preparing and checking geotechnical calculations, design reports (including GIR, GER, GDR, GBR), drawings, specifications and construction-phase technical responses.
- Experience with soil-structure interaction and numerical modelling using Plaxis 2D/3D or similar tools.
- Construction-phase experience, including observation of foundation installation, support of excavation, earthworks, subgrade preparation, instrumentation and monitoring, and review of contractor submittals/RFIs.
- Ability to mentor and guide junior engineers, including delegation, technical review and quality check of calculations and deliverables.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical issues clearly to multidisciplinary teams, clients and contractors.
- Experience with rail/transit, bridge, tunnel, waterfront/marine, aviation, utilities, datacenter or major redevelopment projects preferred.
- Experience with NY/NJ public infrastructure clients or agencies such as MTA, MNR, PANYNJ, NYCDDC, NYCDEP, NYCEDC, Amtrak or similar preferred.
- Active participation in professional organizations and local technical networks preferred.

New York Hiring Range – Hiring Range - The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in New York is $130,000 to $150,000 per year. This range is commensurate with experience, educational background, and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary. Please note hiring ranges for candidates performing work outside of New York will differ.
