Arup is looking for a Senior Urban Planner to join its growing practice in Canada in our Calgary office. We are leading a wide range of planning and design projects across Canada and beyond. Our team works on exciting and complex master planning, public space, and transit integration projects that are setting new standards in the combining of holistic planning principles with technical expertise in multidisciplinary environments.
The opportunity
- Guide and undertake research, analysis, and studies to examine the urban, and policy contexts of projects
- Elaborate urban planning concepts for a variety of project types and scales
- Work collaboratively with peers to define various planning and design solutions
- Prepare high-quality deliverables, including reports, presentations, conceptual diagrams, graphic renderings, cartographic visuals, plans, and drawings
- Lead tasks or manage projects that include the preparation of planning and design documentation at various project stages
- Facilitate project and client meetings
- Contribute to business development and lead or support preparation of proposals
- Contribute to the supervision and training of junior staff
- Commit to Arup's induction processes and over time, learning about our broader business including other groups represented in Canada and elsewhere

Is this role right for you?
- A university degree in Urban & Regional Planning, Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline
- 5+ years of previous experience in urban planning, transportation, or related built-environment field
- Experience in the development of proposals for planning projects and some understanding of local markets
- Professional license in Alberta e.g., MCIP, RPP or equivalent in related discipline)
- Strong knowledge of software and methods, for example: CAD tools (AutoCAD, Sketchup or Rhino), analysis tools (ArcGIS), and graphic design tools (Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop)
- Compelling verbal, written, and visual communication abilities, particularly in the crafting of planning and design narratives, including storytelling
- Knowledge of the planning and transportation contexts of major Canadian metropolitan areas including Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver)
- Proven ability to navigate multidisciplinary work environments and facility with technical integration
- The candidate must be authorized to work in Canada and not require a visa sponsorship
Preferred Qualifications
- A master’s degree in a discipline that, ideally, complements the field of study at the bachelor level
- Cross-disciplinary experience across land use and transportation.
- Holds additional professional licenses or eligibility for other provinces
- Bilingual in French and English (both written and oral communication)

Calgary Hiring Range – The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in Calgary is $105,000 to$125,000 per year. This range is commensurate with experience, educational background, and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary. Please note, hiring ranges for candidates performing work outside of Calgary will differ.
