The Opportunity
To support the delivery of the Aquatic Ecology strategy, a new Associate role is required within the Aquatic Ecology Group. The strategy focuses on expanding our in-house capabilities and enhancing service delivery across clients and projects. It supports strategic growth through investment in equipment, training and team development, while improving internal and external visibility and client engagement. By aligning with Arup’s goals of agility, collaboration and innovation, the strategy aims to deliver resilient, high quality ecological services and strengthen our market position in the UK and internationally.
The scale of opportunity for growth of the Aquatic Ecology service in Arup is significant. To capitalise on this opportunity, focused support to the Head of Aquatic Ecology is required to ensure that the objectives of this strategy can be met.
This role will help to drive the aquatic ecology business within Europe and UKIMEA. It is both national and international and will support the delivery of existing work streams and the growth of the aquatic ecology business.
The role is client facing and involves pro-actively selling Aquatic Ecology services to clients in the UK and abroad, meeting their current and future needs. It will require suitable experience of representing the Arup business and its work at industry events and conferences.
At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share, and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas.
You will have the opportunity do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.
Is this role right for you?
We are looking for people with the following skills –

· Experience in aquatic ecology in consultancy and regulatory roles.
· Fisheries specialist, taking the lead on all related topics including fisheries engineering and mitigation, fish pass/screen optional appraisal, reservoir and hydropower development and fish/eel screening design.
· Delivering technical mentoring, both terms of aquatic survey techniques, and technical assessment / mitigation / design pertaining to water engineering. This will involve writing and delivering training, both online material for junior staff (e.g. introduction to freshwater ecology) and targeted follow up specific training in technical assessments (e.g. fish/eel screening, fish/eel passage, watercourse crossing design, aquatic/fisheries assessment for HRA, reservoir development, hydropower development, noise/vibration and electromagnetic field assessment).
· Supporting technical growth in the UK and Europe, working with the Head of Aquatic Ecology and Nature lead for Europe, to grow and deliver Aquatic Ecology within the UK, EU and beyond. This will involve review of supply chain standards and resilience, quality assurance of subcontractor deliverables and aquatic recruitment / growth.
