Our award winning Business and Investor Advisory team is looking for a senior leader who can support the growth and development of our services in the regulated utilities space with a particular focus on power networks.  We are looking for a team lead with excellent networking, collaboration  and work winning skills to work within our wider Advisory business providing strategic advice to investors in energy infrastructure, utility companies and asset owners, government and regulators. 

​The candidate will be a self starter, able to manage complex assignments, with line management responsibility both to support the development of the existing team and to consider its future development leveraging expertise both within the BIA team, and Arup’s wider 20,000 strong global business.  Our work tends to be global in nature, and experience of working in other geographies is welcome though a strong working knowledge of UK and European energy markets is essential. 

​Our market leading team specialises in transactions advice and providing strategic analysis and providing a range of strategic advisory services to infrastructure investor, asset owners, regulators and government. Our team is consistently recognised as an award winning technical advisor across energy infrastructure globally with particular expertise in regulated utilities, renewable energy and decarbonisation. 

​The team is highly aligned with Arup’s “A Better Way” strategy and with our commitment to the United Nations SDGs and a route to net zero carbon.

The Opportunity

​As an Associate Director in the team you will be responsible both for your own continuing professional development and leading by example.  You will also be responsible for mentoring and supporting the development of others around you to support the continued growth and development of our award winning team. You will be involved in in both business development and managing client relationships as well as delivering the highest quality work products in a transaction advisory context. 

Client relationship development and work winning – A key part of the role will be to grow and develop our existing client base, with a particular focus new client relationships, to support business development and work winning across the energy transition space.

​​Leading assignments – As an Transaction Associate Director you will be considered a “safe pair of hands” to manage complex and challenging projects with limited support from the senior leadership of the team. You will be responsible for managing the quality of our work and ensuring that our work products delight our clients and meet their expectations.  

​Commercial management of assignments – You will also be responsible for agreeing the scope and budget of assignments and managing these accordingly to deliver projects profitably, on time and in line with agreed targets.  

​Client facing roles – You will be operating with a high level of autonomy in client facing roles both in terms of project delivery, and in terms of business development.  You will be expected to actively manage your client networks and relationships and coordinate with the efforts of the wider team. 

​Leadership – You will be expected to show team working, leadership and judgement taking responsibility for the performance of the team in delivering transaction and strategic advice.  You will be a role model for junior staff to follow and you will be expected to consider and support the development of junior team members in your own career development plan. 

​Sectoral knowledge – You will have developed both broad and deep sectoral knowledge in some or all of the areas in which we operate and will be prepared to contribute this to enhance the performance of our team. 

​Process improvement and continuous development – you will actively participate in opportunities to feed learning back into the team to enhance and develop our processes and to strive to continue leverage our knowledge base and experience to deliver high quality work products as efficiently as possible 

​Advocating for Arup – As a senior member of the team you will be expected to contribute to the wider industry through actively seeking opportunities to increase our impact and influence in the sector, to be an active voice in the energy transition debate and to reflect Arup values.

Is this role right for you? 

A person who is a good fit for the role will have:

  • ​Attained chartered status or equivalent qualification with a recognised professional institution.
  • Proven track record of work winning in Regulated Utilities/Power Networks.
  • Prior experience of due diligence, business case analysis or strategic advisory roles  on energy infrastructure assets.
  • Excellent team working and leadership skills.
  • ​A high level of commercial acumen.
  • ​Strong networking and relationship management skills.
  • Dedicated commitment to continuing professional development of self and others.
  • Expertise in areas of specialist knowledge – examples of thought leadership and active participation in industry thinking.
