The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Building Management Systems (BMS) / Building Controls Engineer to help design, integrate, and commission controls solutions for mission-critical facilities, with a focus on data centers. You'll collaborate with mechanical, electrical, IT/ICT and sustainability teams to deliver robust, energy-efficient control strategies that meet availability and resilience targets.
As a Building Management Systems (BMS) / Building Controls Engineer at Arup, you will:
Design & Integration: Develop BMS architectures, I/O schedules, and controls narratives for HVAC, chilled water, air handling, CRAH/CRAC, heat-rejection and ancillary systems in data centers,
Control Strategies: Author sequence of operations (soO) for normal, maintenance and fault/contingency scenarios (N+1, N+N, failover, load-shedding, emergency ventilation),
Commissioning & Acceptance: Plan FAT/SAT, oversee point-to-point testing, tuning/PID, alarm rationalization, and performance verification against KPIs (PUE, WUE, thermal compliance)
Analytics & Optimization: Use trend logs, dashboards and analytics to diagnose issues, optimize setpoints, and improve energy efficiency without compromising uptime,
Interoperability: Ensure reliable integration with BACnet, Modbus, OPC and related protocols; coordinate with EPMS/SCADA,DCIM and cybersecurity stakeholders,
Documentation & Reporting: Produce submittals, drawings (with the design team), test scripts, commissioning reports and client presentations,
Collaboration: Work closely with multidisciplinary teams and vendors to ensure designs are practical, maintainable and aligned with project constraints and standards.
Does this role inspire you?
We're looking for someone who is passionate about Building Management Systems (BMS) / Building Controls Engineer to help design, integrate, and commission controls solutions for mission-critical facilities, with a focus on data centers. We also value:
- Degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or a related discipline,
- 5+ years hands-on experience in BMS/building controls design, implementation or commissioning,
- Proven proficiency with major BMS platforms (e.g., Siemens, Schneider, Honeywell, Johnson Controls, Tridium Niagara or equivalent),
- Strong working knowledge of HVAC/thermal dynamics in high density environments and data hall air distribution,
- Experience with BACnet and Modbus communication, point mapping, and device/integration troubleshooting,
- Ability to read/control mechanical & electrical schematics, create sequences of operations, and write/tune control logic,
- Fluency in English; clear written and verbal communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Nice to have (preferred)
- Data center project experience (white space, electrical rooms, containment/airflow, resilience strategies),
- Familiarity with DCIM, EPMS/SCADA integration, and alarm management,
- Experience with energy optimization, analytics platforms, fault detection & diagnostics (FDD).
