Senior CFD Engineer - Data Centres & Mission-Critical Systems
Shape a future with purpose at Arup in Istanbul & Ankara.
Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 75 years, guiding how we shape a better world.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a Senior Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Engineer to lead modelling and analysis for data centres and other mission‑critical environments. You will own end‑to‑end CFD scope—methodology, scenario design, simulation, results interpretation, mitigation strategies—and collaborate closely with MEP, architecture, ICT/controls teams to ensure thermal compliance, resilience and energy performance.
As a Senior Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Engineer at Arup, you will:
CFD Strategy & Delivery: Define objectives, acceptance criteria and scenario matrices; select turbulence/thermal models; plan mesh strategy, grid‑independence and QA/QC,
Internal Airflow & Thermal: Model white‑space air distribution (CRAH/CRAC, aisle containment, plenum leakage, bypass/recirculation), evaluate rack inlet temperatures, hotspots and compliance against guidelines,
External Microclimate: Assess wind‑driven effects, heat rejection and re‑entrainment for chillers/dry coolers; evaluate generator radiator and flue exhaust dispersion and impact on air intakes; propose mitigation (layout, baffles, screens, stack heights). [Turkcell H...D Analysis | Outlook], [CFD_Exampl...Riba-3 BOD | PowerPoint],
Failure & Contingency Scenarios: Simulate N+1/N+N operations, fan/pump/chiller/generator failures, grid‑loss emergency ventilation, load‑shedding and maintenance modes. [Turkcell H...D Analysis | Outlook],
Liquid Cooling & High Density: Analyse rear‑door HX, cold‑plate and immersion concepts; quantify performance envelopes and integration constraints,
Reporting & Stakeholder Engagement: Produce clear technical reports, visualisations and executive summaries; present findings to clients and coordinate with design teams on practical mitigations,
Performance Optimisation: Use trend/log data and metered KPIs to calibrate models; recommend setpoint/tuning strategies to balance availability and efficiency.
Does this role inspire you?
We're looking for someone who is passionate about lead modelling and analysis for data centres and other mission‑critical environments.
- Degree in Mechanical/Aerospace/Building Physics or related field; advanced degree preferred,
- 7+ years hands‑on CFD experience, including data centre or mission‑critical projects,
- Proficiency with ANSYS Fluent, STAR‑CCM+, OpenFOAM (or equivalent); strong meshing/post‑processing skills; scripting for automation (e.g., Python) and comfort with HPC environments,
- Solid grounding in heat transfer, turbulence modelling, boundary condition selection and validation techniques,
- Ability to interpret results into design actions (layout changes, shielding, SoO updates) and communicate clearly in English to technical/non‑technical stakeholders.
Nice to have
Familiarity with DCIM/EPMS/BMS data for model calibration and operational playbooks,
Experience with brownfield upgrades and live‑site constraints,
Awareness of industry guidance for thermal compliance and rated objectives (e.g., common practice based on ASHRAE data‑centre guidelines).
