The Senior Systems Designer will be focused on the design of specialist systems in an airport environment, working on both new and existing airports and terminals as part of aviation digital projects. Projects may include IT infrastructure, operational systems, and digital & data solutions. 

The role will have input into all aspects of a project including but not limited to the following – gathering and validating customer requirements, scope management, providing input to resource plans, estimating project costs/budget, creating and managing documentation, managing internal and external communications, 3rd party vendor co-ordination, producing deliverables and ensuring customer satisfaction.

The individual requires a strong understanding of the priorities and concerns of the relevant client stakeholders and how to translate these into systems design considerations. The individual should be able to work directly with client stakeholders (e.g. airfield operations staff, terminal managers, operations leads, IT managers) in order to ask detailed questions, gather requirements, highlight applicable standards, and understand existing architecture.

The individual should have a good understanding of specialist operational systems in the airport environmentincluding operational databases and dashboards, FIDS, billing, resource management, passenger processing, biometric gates, and passenger tracking. They must be able to present complex solutions, both graphically and verbally, to clients and colleagues in order to gain acceptance. They must be able to understand and explain concepts of data architecture, integration and infrastructure.

The Opportunity

  • This role will form a key part of the team delivering services to a major airport
  • Regularly interact with clients, hosting technical discussions on the functional and technical requirements of airport systems, explaining architecture and concepts, gaining buy in for technical ideas etc.
  • Develop functional and technical requirements relating to airport systems, based on client discussions, legal and technical standards, and market intelligence
  • Meet with potential systems suppliers to understand their roadmaps, strengths / weaknesses, compliance to requirements, and relevant differences
  • Identify and prioritise technology initiatives to support the aviation industry's evolving needs
  • Delegate tasks and responsibilities effectively, ensuring efficient execution of IT projects and initiatives
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and trends in the aviation industry, evaluating their potential benefits and impact on operations
  • Communicate IT strategies, progress, and achievements to senior management

Is this role right for you? 

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field, with at least 7 to 10 years of aviation-related IT experience.
  • Proven success delivering complex IT projects, with strong technical knowledge of aviation systems such as passenger processing, airport operations, smart airport solutions, and IT infrastructure.
  • Strong working knowledge of Aviation technologies, Systems, and Solutions such as Passenger Processing Systems, Airport Operational Systems, Information Systems, Smart Airport Solutions, Aviation Automation Systems and IT Infrastructure
  • Deep understanding of airport/aviation operations, civil aviation and regulatory authority regulations, processes (eg. airport systems design, ORAT) and standards (IATA standards), technologies and systems
  • Knowledge in IT Architecture innovation and digital transformation and Cyber Security
  • Knowledge in Big Data, Data Analytics, Business Intelligence Data Warehousing, and Internet of Things (IOT) 
  • Experience in airport and airline operations from an operational perspective
  • Exceptional communication, leadership, and stakeholder-engagement skills, with the ability to perform under pressure and inspire team performance.
